Authentic movement is that process of self-exploration which allows you to be anchored in your center while experiencing internal sensations (Pollaro, 2007). It comes from deep felt sense of permitting the energy to flow with or without knowing what it represents. Allowing to be moved by an inner impulse seeking freedom through expression, movement provides with wings, freedom and openness. It allows the blockages to be seen. An obstruction can be encountered when an impulse is followed. One may not know what the block contains (Pollaro, 2007). But if not followed, it cannot emerge and therefore cannot be overcome.
In its highest manifestation AM acknowledges the freedom of the energy, allowing it to take over, leading it to take its righteous space. It grants permission to whatever has been held inside for so long to reveal. It lets the soma be free, run with the wild and dance with the wind. There is no limit for the flow of energy. It is an endless stream pouring out of a mover through its multiple forms- big and vigorous, small and still. Centred in one’s Hara (dantian) they become a witness to the change they embody (Chodorow, 2004). Becoming it, one can experience a whole spectrum of emotions. It’s transformation is felt within the core, making a mover true, honest and vulnerable. The life force itself comes from there. Emotions connect to the soul. When vulnerable one cannot not be true to themselves (Pollaro, 2007). Every move from that space touches the being. That cannot go unnoticed. It’s the subjective reality that is of utmost beauty. Embodying vulnerability is what fills the soma with life. Here lies the difference between a BODY and a SOMA. A SOMA is the living body (Hanna, 1980)! A conscious being aware of itself! A creature deeply experiencing the world! Amazed by every little detail! It sees the world through colourful lens! Lens that provide life with purpose. Connected to everything and everyone, it is a force in a human form with potential beyond mind’s comprehension.
